The film has created a dent on values, principles and personality of our sacred deities and Gods by distorting every aspect of its fundamental values and principles and hence has hurt our sentiments, the plea contended.

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to revoke the certificate granted by Central Board of Film Certification to a feature film “Adipurush” for hurting the sentiments of Hindu community and devotees of Lords Ram and Hanuman and other deities by distorting and destroying the fundamental values and characters of the deities.

The Public Interest Litigation filed by Mamta Rani, a practicing advocate contends the movies has altered and modified the basic structure of sacred text in their screen adaptation of 'Valmiki Ramayana', and is thus being violative of statutory provision embodied in Section 5B of Cinematograph Act 1952.

It is further contended that the depiction of physical features of Lords Rama and Hanuman and their communication with other characters in the movie is complete distortion of not only the characters but also the very fundamental values for which they are worshipped and hence influencing the general public into believing a different value and morals.

"Also, a derogatory dialogue made in the feature film "Adipurush" where Lord Hanuman Ji who is named as Bajrangi make derogatory dialogue in response to the rival Indrajeet. Such statements are never used in a civilised society but used only by gully boys in India," Rani has contended.

"Using the derogatory rebuttal in words can never be an inspiration to anyone and such distortion to such a great personality and deity like Lord Hanuman is blasphemy and this must be stopped," she added.

The plea says that such blasphemous act with malicious intention is not new but a periodic attempt made by Bollywood creators like directors, actors and producers to malign and defame the core values and principles of Sanatan Dharma/ Hindu Community, which has been evident from the previous feature films like ‘Kaali’ ‘Oh My God’, ‘PK’ and now ‘Adipurush’.

Petitioner further claims “Adipurush” feature film directed by Om Raut has hurt the sentiments of Hindu community by showing mocking representation of the Valmiki Ramayana for their personal commercial gain.

"The dialogues in the movie are showing very degrading in nature of the deities and Gods and the representation of Mata Sita is also not appropriate or is vulgar which hurt the very sentiment of Petitioner herself. The whole story of the film “Adipurush” has destroyed and modified every aspect of the core values of the characters, their language and each authentic event," it claimed.

The movie has depicted the image and look of Ravan in a manner which is not only contrary to the public perception based on Valmiki Ramayan and Tulsidas Ramcharitmanas but even the costume of the character and the shape and depiction of the beard as well as the moustache of Ravana has been shown entirely in a different manner.

"The Hindu sentiments have been badly hurt by this feature film Adipurush. Similarly, the costume and image of Lord Ram, Mata Sita and Hanuman have also been characterized and depicted in an entirely different manner which has provoked the sentiments of the Hindus which is reflected by the criticism in the media," it said.

It also stated the movie, released on June 16, 2023, has seen continuous alteration and modifications, since its release which is completely illegal and violation of Section 7 of the Cinematograph Act 1952 wherein three years of imprisonment is provided for the violation of this Section.

"No action being taken by CBFC for this violation till date," the plea submits.

The petitioner, after being hurt by such an inaccurate description of the religious leaders and characters in the film, also gave a representation on June 22, 2023 to the Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and to the CBFC. However, the said representation has not been responded to as on date, her plea said.

Last week, the Delhi High Court had refused urgent listing of a plea seeking a direction to cancel the certificate of movie 'Adipurush' and immediately ban it for hurting sentiments of Hindu community in the name of creative liberty and artistic representation. The writ petition is listed on June 30 for hearing.

In January, the Allahabad High Court had also issued notice to the Central Board of Film Certification in a plea seeking stay on the release of the movie Adipurush.
