Synopsis

"We believe that citizens would hugely benefit ‘by hearing directly from our political leaders through a public debate on a non-partisan and non-commercial platform...", the letter states

Retired Supreme Court Justice Madan B Lokur, Retired Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Ajit P Shah and former Editor of The Hindu N. Ram have written to the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi inviting them to a public debate on the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

As members of the public, we are concerned that we have heard only allegations and challenges from either side, and not heard any meaningful responses, the letter states, adding that in these circumstances it is fundamentally important to ensure that the public is well educated about all aspects of the debate so that they can make an informed choice at the ballots.

The formed judges and editor have stated that issues like Article 370, wealth redistribution, electoral bonds scheme and the government's response to China along with the parties manifestos have been questioned.

The letter inviting the political leaders adds that this debate would help to strengthen our democratic process immensely.

"This bears more relevance as we are the world’s largest democracy, and the entire world is watching our elections keenly. A public debate such as this would, therefore, set a great precedent, not just by educating the public, but also in projecting the true image
of a healthy and vibrant democracy...",
the letter states.

The duration, venue, format and moderators of the debate may be decided on terms agreeable to the two leaders, it has been said.
