The Supreme Court of India today stayed the notice issued to West Bengal Chief Secretary and other officials by Lok Sabha Privileges Committee over a complaint by BJP leader and MP Sukanta Majumdar alleging misconduct and life-threatening injuries.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the State of West Bengal told the CJI DY Chandrachud led bench that the complaint was based on falsehood.

Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra comprising bench has also issued notice to the Lok Sabha secretariat.

Allegedly, Majumdar was stopped from entering Sandeshkhali, where women have been agitating over alleged atrocities committed against them by Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his aides.

Arguments were made today against the invocation of privilege in such a context.

Notably, counsel for the Lok Sabha secretariat clarified that the privileges committee's proceedings were routine. "This is the first sitting of privileges committee. They are not being accused of anything. This is a regular process...," the bench was told.
