A special NIA court has reserved its judgment in the Malegaon blast case, which is likely to be pronounced on May 8.

The Supreme Court of India on Friday, May 2, 2025, disposed of a plea that had challenged the Bombay High Court's 2017 decision to grant bail to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur in the 2008 Malegaon Blast case.

A bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma was hearing a petition filed by Nisar Ahmed Haji Sayed Bilal, the father of one of the blast victims, challenging the High Court’s decision to grant bail to Thakur.

In April 2017, the Bombay High Court had granted bail to Thakur, holding that no prima facie case had been made out against her.

During the proceedings, the court observed that the Special NIA Court in Mumbai had reserved its judgment in the case. Therefore, the court held there was no need for further consideration.

"In the circumstances, we do not find any reason to consider this matter any further. Hence, the Special Leave Petition is disposed of owing to the aforesaid reason," the court held.

Earlier in April, a special NIA court reserved its judgment in the Malegaon blast case after the completion of the trial. The prosecution had filed its final written submissions. Over the course of the trial, the prosecution examined 323 witnesses, of whom 34 turned hostile.

Special Judge Abhay Kamalnayan Lahoti posted the matter for judgment on 8 May 2025.

Initially, the investigation into the matter was conducted by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). However, the case was later transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The Malegaon Blast Case, dating back to 2008, has been marred by complexity and controversy. Six individuals lost their lives, and approximately 100 others sustained injuries in the tragic incident.
