Synopsis

CJI Chandrachud has further stated that he would ask the High Courts' to follow the same mechanism set out by the Apex Court to make information about the courts more accessible to the public at large

The Supreme Court on Friday observed that the online portal for streamlining the responses under the Right to Information Act, 2005 is practically ready for being launched.

A CJI DY Chandrachud led bench made these observations while disposing off a plea which sought directions to include Supreme Court in to setting up an online RTI Portal in a time-bound manner.

"In this view of the matter, the grievance of the petitioners has been duly met. The petition is accordingly disposed of", observed the bench also comprising Justice Hima Kohli.

CJI Chandrachud further observed that the portal would make the judge's lives easier and refereed to the large inflow of correspondence.

"We will also push the High Courts to do this,..." he added.

In September, the then CJI UU Lalit led bench had dismissedplea seeking to bring the Supreme Court of India under the ambit of Right to Information.

While doing so, CJI Lalit had remarked, " It (petition) 'is a good one' but it cannot be entertained under Article 32."

The plea by a 5th year law student, Ramey Krishna Rana challenged the non-availability of the Supreme Court and the Indian Judiciary over the RTI online portal even after 8 years of its enactment.

The petition further highlighted how the process of physical filing of RTI has been gravely hampered due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and that physical filing of RTI application has become a costly affair in "its truest sense".
