Sharjeel Imam a "Lone Wolf", a philosopher, thinker who gave up corporate job: Imam's counsel tells Delhi Court

Read Time: 06 minutes

The Counsel for Sharjeel Imam told Court today that the prosecution has no case against Imam as no evidence has been projected in order to convince the court that he is guilty.

He told Court that Sharjeel Imam is in fact someone who lacked support and touted as someone bigger than what he really was and was insecure that after his 7 generations lived in India, he will now be asked, due to the incoming of the Citizenship Amendment Act, to prove that he is not a Bangladeshi.

"Sharjeel is Lone Wolf. No one has acted in tandem with him. He think much more of himself than he actually is. That is a demon. All of them have disowned my style of politics. I am no part of some "DPSG" group. Sharjeel Imam is a thinker, is a philoposher, he quits a corporate job. "Sharjeel apni hi dhun Mei hai". He believes that the government will telling him "what is the guarantee you are not a Bangladeshi"

Before a bench of Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, Imam's lawyer argued that though the Court has found Imam's speeches seditious, it has not found that the court has found that he perpetuated violence. "Prosecution tried to weave a web that there was an agreement to spread violence. Within this, he has to also show for who's murder he conspired," said Imam's lawyer.

His counsel stated that there was no evidence to suggest that Imam perpetuated violence.

"Where are the words "Dangey karwaiye"? The words Sharjeel Imam is using is "Ehitahaad kijiye", "Chakka Jaam" kijiye. Recently a chakka jam by political dispensation because beautiful wine shops were being given to delhi. We have seen this since times immemorial," he added

Imam's lawyer further informed Court that the insinuation that Imam engaged in a conspiracy is based on bits and pieces of evidences which have no nexus to each other at all. He then referred to Kapil Mishra's speech to say, "How come what he said was not conspiracy but what Sharjeel Imam said is?"

"Kaun Sadak par chada, aur kisnę kaha "agar sadak khaali nahi kari, toh humei khaali karna aataa hai" - this is not conspiracy but what Sharjeel Imam said is conspiracy!"
- Arguments for Imam

"Arrest of Sharjeel Imam not for conspiracy. It is for seditious speech. To say he was arrested for conspiracy, is a misdirected argument. Conspiracy in itself can be investigated independently even if Sharjeel was arrested pursuant to seditious speeches"

The Court has now reserved its order on the issue of bail to Sharjeel Imam and a date for pronouncement will be available shortly.
