Supreme Court advises use of masks amid worsening AQI in Delhi NCR; courts to continue in hybrid mode

Synopsis

SG Mehta today requested for total virtual mode of the Supreme Court, but CJI said at present courts would function in hybrid mode

The Supreme Court yesterday issued a circular advising all to ensure wearing of mask and taking health measures as the air quality is worsening in the Delhi NCR region.

This direction has been issued in reference to the order dated 17.11.2024 of Director (Technical), Member Convenor of Sub-Committee on GRAP, Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas notifying implementation of Actions
under stage-IV (‘Severe+’ Air Quality) of revised Graded Response Action Plan in Delhi-NCR.

Today, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and SCBA President Kapil Sibal requested the Chief Justice of India for a complete virtual functioning of all courts in Delhi and NCR region citing severe pollution levels warranting GRAP IV measures.

CJI Sanjiv Khanna in response said courts would function in hybrid mode.

Lawyers have option of attending courts physically or virtually the CJI said, assuring no case will be dismissed due to absence of lawyers' in courtroom.
