The Supreme Court on Monday denied interim bail to Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan for participating in Uttar Pradesh elections.

A bench of Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice BR Gavai denied interim bail while giving liberty to Khan to approach Allahabad High Court in this regard.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for Khan submitted that that FIRs are registered just before elections and most of them relate to events that occurred long back.

In addition to this Sibal further argued that the applications filed for bail in the High Court are being adjourned and the petitioner is suffering in jail due to FIRs registered on false and frivolous grounds.

Mentioning about the delay in the hearing of bail application in court, Sibal submitted that "This is going on from 3-4 months and I'm inside jail for no reason."

The bench however, granted liberty to approach the concerned court and request for expeditious disposal of the bail applications.

In addition to this the bench also directed the Court to dispose of the bail applications expeditiously.
