Supreme Court on Thursday directed the State of Punjab not to take coercive steps against Akali Dal Leader Bikram Singh Majithia. Majithia has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

“This is not the election fever, this is the election virus,” said the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana while listing the appeal against dismissal of anticipatory bail of Majithia next week.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had on 24th January dismissed Majithia’s anticipatory bail plea and protected him for three days to approach the Supreme Court.

Mukul Rohatgi, Senior Advocate, appeared for Majithia and informed the court that the matter “reeks of political rivalry.” He further submitted that the High Court had granted a mere three days to approach the Supreme Court, which is unusual.

P. Chidambaram, Senior Advocate, appearing from the State of Punjab submitted that the Majithia has gone into hiding despite the order of the High Court.

Mukul Rohatgi, Snr. Adv. and R.S. Cheema, Snr. Adv, were assisted by a team from Karanjawala & Co. led by Advocate Nandini Gore,(Senior partner) and Sandeep Kapur (Senior partner) , Advocate and comprising Virinder Sandhu, Sonia Nigam, Tahira Karanjawala, Apoorva Pandey, Aashneet Singh Anand, Neha Khandelwal, Arjun Sharma, Abhimanshu Dhyani and Sahil Modi advocates.
