A Supreme Court bench of Justices Nageshwar Rao and Gavail today granted bail to a Tamil Nadu godman Shiva Sankar Baba (C.N.Shiva Sankaran). Court also asked him not to use social media to influence the witnesses in child abuse cases registered against him.
Shiva Sankaran was arrested in Delhi in 2020 on allegations of sexually harassing students in the school that his ashram runs. He is presently lodged at Central Prison, Puzhal, Chennai.
Many cases have been registered against him by former students of the Sushil Hari International Residential School near Chennai. The students have alleged that Shankran behaved inappropriately with them.
Earlier, Shankaran was denied bail by Madras High Court as the State of Tamil Nadu had argued before the court that Shankaran is capable of influencing the victims and witnesses if he is released on bail. The high court had further opined that there was a prima facie case made out against Shankaran.
When the matter came up for hearing before the Top Court, Sidharth Luthra, Sr. Adv submitted that Shankaran is suffering from many ailments including heart disease and paralytic stroke.
Justice Nageshwar Rao, at this point, remarked that he was informed that Shankaran uses his Youtube channel to influence people not to file cases against him.
To this, Luthra said that the Tamil Nadu government has been running advertisements asking people to come forward if they have allegations against Shiva Shankar Baba as a result of which many false cases may have been filed as well.
Court, on hearing these submissions, granted bail to him on following conditions:
