Supreme Court to have special benches to hear tax cases

Synopsis

The Supreme Court on Wednesday has further said that special benches will also be constituted to hear criminal appeals, land acquisition matters and motor accident claim cases.

Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud on Tuesday remarked that the Supreme Court would have a special bench to exclusively deal with tax cases from next week onwards.

"From next week onwards, on Wednesdays and Fridays, special benches will be constituted to deal with direct and indirect sales tax matters solely", said the CJI while addressing a group of lawyers.

Today, CJI Chandrachud led bench also comprising Justices Hima Kohli and JB Pardiwala added that from next week special benches will also be constituted to hear criminal appeals, land acquisition matters and motor accident claim cases.

Notably, a Circular was issued by the Top Court on Tuesday, whereby it has notified a new system for listing of cases.

As per the circular dated November 22nd, 10 Transfer Petitions (after notice) followed by 10 Bail Matters will be listed at the top of the Board before the Courts on all five days.

Also, 7 Fresh Matters will be listed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday every week.

Top Court has further notified the Bar that regular hearing matters will be listed on Wednesday and Thursday and no Regular hearing matters will be listed on Tuesday.

Moreover, applications for condonation of delay in re-filing instances shall be listed before the Court along with the matter, instead of being listed before Chamber Judge or before Registrar Court.
