A Supreme Court bench of Justices UU Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat, and PS Narasimha today issued notice in a plea seeking issuance of Aadhar to a total of 27 lakh persons whose names have been added in the National Register of Citizens by Assam in August 2019. The plea is filed by Trinamool Congress MP Susmita Dev.

The plea alleges that though these people whose names featured in the second NRC list applied for the Aadhar card, their applications were rejected by the Unique Identification Authority of India.

The plea reads that the denial of the Aadhar card amounts to violation of fundamental rights under Article 14 of the Constitution of India.

When the matter came up for hearing today, Biswajit Deb, Sr. Adv appearing for Dev submitted that the issue pertains to the question as to whether Aadhar can be denied to those whose names have been in the Second list of NRC.

He further submitted that the persons who were included in the first list of NRC dated December 2017 have already received their Aadhar cards and that the persons in the second list are yet to receive the same.

Court, on hearing the submission of the petitioners, issued notice to the UIDAI and the State of Assam. Court further indicated that it will list the matter for hearing in May.
