Supreme Court orders status quo on Thane dargah demolition

The Supreme Court of India has ordered a status quo on the demolitions at a dargah situated in Thane, Maharashtra.
Staying the demolition for 7-days, bench of Justices Sandeep Mehta and Prasanna B Varale has asked the petitioners before it, Pardeshi Baba Trust, to move the Bombay High Court for relief, which had issued the demolition order regarding the structure.
Yesterday, Supreme Court was informed that High Court while passing the impugned order did not take into consideration the fact that a civil suit filed on the same issue was dismissed in April 2025.
Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the Trust, informed the top court that while only 3,600 square feet of construction was the issue, the high court dealt with the entire land of the dargah.
The structure was expanded without municipal approvals on private land in Thane, Maharashtra, the respondents told the Supreme Court yesterday. One of private respondents has also accused the petitioner of engaging in systematic land encroachment under the guise of religion.
