A Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundaresh today refused to hear a plea filed by former police commissioner of Mumbai, Parambir Singh, until he reveals his whereabouts to the court. The plea challenges inquiry initiated against him by the Maharashtra Government.
Singh had approached the court through a power holder. A visibly upset Justice Kaul remarked that there is clear display of lack of confidence in the system despite Singh being a former police commissioner. Justice Kaul further questioned Singh’s lawyer if he will come out from hiding only if he is granted protection by the court.
Earlier during the hearing, bench further asked Singh’s lawyer as to where he is and if he is in the country or elsewhere while declining to hear the case till the court knows where Singh is.
The court was hearing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by Singh against the judgment of Bombay High Court dated September 16. The High Court had dismissed the petition by Singh challenging two preliminary inquiries against him by the government.
It is to be noted that a Mumbai court, yesterday, on an application by Mumbai police declared Singh as a ‘proclaimed offender.’ The court has adjourned the matter to 22nd November asking Singh’s lawyer to get back on his location.
The matter will now be heard on 22nd November.
