Supreme Court refuses plea to deregister Asaduddin Owisi's AIMIM

The Supreme Court of India yesterday refused to entertain a petition seeking directions to the Election Commission of India to de-register Asaduddin Owaisi led political party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Musalimeen (AIMIM).
A bench led by Justice Surya Kant has allowed the petitioner to file a fresh petition raising larger issues of political parties advancing communal interests.
"Learned counsel for the petitioner seeks to withdraw this petition with liberty to file a Writ Petition wherein he wishes to make a wider prayer for reforms in respect of the political parties on different counts. Permission, as prayed for, is granted. The Special Leave Petition is, accordingly, dismissed as withdrawn with liberty as aforementioned.", the top court has ordered.
Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain appeared for the petitioner Tirupati Narasimha Murari who challenged a Delhi High Court's 2024 decision refusing his petition filed before it.
Murari had challenged the AIMIM’s recognition, contending that its constitution was intended to further the cause of only one religious community.
