Supreme Court registers suo moto case over Karnataka High Court judge' controversial comments

A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court of India assembled today morning to take suo moto cognizance of the comments made by a judge of the Karnataka High Court.

The bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hrishikesh Roy has taken note of controversial comments made by Justice V Srishananda.

CJI Chandrachud has directed Registrar General, Karnataka High Court to submit a report coming from the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court on the incident in two days time.

The matter will now be heard on coming Wednesday.

"Our attention has been drawn to some comment made Karnataka High Court judge Justice V Srishananda during conduct of judicial proceedings. We ask the registrar general of the High Court to submit a report to this court after seeking administrative directions from the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court", the order reads.

Court also said that it was inclined to issue some guidelines on the issue.

Justice Srihasnanda recently referred to a Muslim-majority area of Bengaluru as “Pakistan” during a hearing in a landlord-tenant case.

In another incident, he pulled up a lady advocate on answering a question out of turn and said that as she knew a lot about the opposite party, she could even reveal the colour of his undergarment.
