Supreme Court Takes Suo Moto Cognizance On Pendency In Bail Matters

Supreme Court has decided to take up a Suo Moto Writ Petition concerning Pendency in Bail Matters.

A 3-judge bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice Nageswara Rao and Justice AS Bopanna will be hearing the matter tomorrow, as per Supreme Court cause list dated July 16, 2021.

On July 8, The Top Court had granted interim Bail to 13 Juvenile Prisoners Languishing in Agra Jail.

In Contagion of COVID 19 Virus In Prisons, Court said,

“It is observed that some of the prisons in India are overburdened and are housing inmates beyond optimal capacity. In this regard, we may notice that the requirement of decongestion is a matter concerning health and Right to Life of both the prison inmates and the police personnel working”

As per Integrated Cooperative Management Information System (ICMIS), 931 cases related to Bail, Interim Bail, Anticipatory Bail (as of December 2020), remains pending before the Supreme Court.
