Synopsis

The Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023 introduces harsher penalties for homosexual acts and curbs freedom of the LGBTQ+ community.

The World Bank is delaying clearance for new public finance projects in Uganda due to the country's enactment of a widely criticised bill criminalising same-sex conduct.

“Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act fundamentally contradicts the World Bank Group’s values”, the development lender said in a statement released on Tuesday, adding that no new public financing would be offered in the nation's favour for the time being.

The decision came in response to demands from Human Rights organisations and members of the US Congress to take a harsher stance with Kampala on the law, which is one of the harshest in the world.

Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023 makes "aggravated homosexuality" a capital offence and sets penalties of upto life imprisonment for consenting to same-sex relationships.

“Our goal is to protect sexual and gender minorities from discrimination and exclusion in the projects we finance”, the statement by World Bank further added.
