Synopsis

Sisodia has moved the High Court seeking interim bail, citing ill health of his wife. The plea is listed for consideration on May 4, 2023.

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party Leader Manish Sisodia on Wednesday moved the Delhi High Court seeking ‘interim bail’ in the case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the excise policy scam.

During the hearing today, Senior Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal, on behalf of Sisiodia contended, “We are seeking interim bail due to the ill health of my wife. We have placed on record my (Sisodia’s) wife’s health history of 20 years, she recently had an attack. The recent report of the neurologist has also been placed on record”.

The bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma issued notice to the CBI in the interim bail plea and noted that the regular bail application is listed for hearing tomorrow.

“CBI may make the endeavor to file the report tomorrow”, the court remarked orally.

Accordingly, the court posted the matter for hearing tomorrow i.e. May 4, 2023.

Notably, Sisodia’s bail plea in the CBI case was 'dismissed' by Special Judge MK Nagpal of Rouse Avenue Court, Delhi on March 31. While rejecting the bail plea, the court had stated that Sisodia played "the most important and vital role" in the criminal conspiracy, and he had been "deeply involved" in the formulation and implementation of the said policy.

Sisodia has challenged the trial court order denying him bail before the Delhi High Court, and the same is being heard before the bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma.

It is CBI's case that there were alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy for the year 2021-22.  On February 26, the CBI commenced a second round of questioning after Sisodia was earlier questioned on October 17 last year. The first chargesheet in the matter was filed on November 25, 2022. CBI had filed a supplementary chargesheet before the Special Judge on April 25, 2023, against Sisodia, Butchi Babu Gorantla, Arjun Pandey, and Amandeep Singh Dhall under Sections 120B, 201 and 420 of IPC and Sections 7, 7A, 8 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

It is also to be noted that Sisodia was also arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on March 9, 2023 evening, in connection with the Delhi liquor scam case.
