Ghaziabad Court orders FIR over Akhilesh Yadav deepfake video allegations.

A Ghaziabad court has directed the police to register an FIR over the circulation of alleged AI-generated “deepfake” photos, videos of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, which purportedly showed him making objectionable remarks.

The order was passed on May 15 by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Manas Vats, Ghaziabad, on an application filed under Section 173(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS)(previously Section 154 of CrPC).

The complaint was moved by Irfan Amanat Chaudhary, who identified himself as a member of Samajwadi Party and district president of the Mulayam Singh Youth Brigade in Ghaziabad. In his plea, Chaudhary alleged that a Facebook page titled “Bua Babua” uploaded a manipulated video on April 15, 2026, falsely depicting Yadav making inflammatory comments.

According to the application, the video was created using artificial intelligence and edited technology to deliberately spread caste hostility, incite social tension and tarnish the image of both Yadav and the Samajwadi Party. The plea further alleged that once the video began circulating online, abusive and threatening comments started appearing against the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and his party.

The complainant also alleged that several fake social media profiles and pages were being operated with the objective of misleading the public and creating discord between communities. He claimed he had approached police authorities earlier under Section 174(2) BNSS seeking registration of a case, but no FIR was lodged.

During the proceedings, the court sought a report from Masuri police station in Ghaziabad. The police informed the court that no case had yet been registered in relation to the allegations.

After examining the complaint, screenshots of the Facebook posts, comments and other supporting material filed by the applicant, the court observed that prima facie cognisable offences appeared to be disclosed. The magistrate thereafter directed the Station House Officer of Masuri police station to register an FIR and carry out an investigation within two days in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.
