The Police Commissioner while briefing media about the case said that Shafi viciously raped a woman in 2020, stabbing her in the privates with a knife. Kochi City Police Commissioner H Nagaraju said, "We have found out that the same places were injured in the two women who were murdered apparently as human sacrifice."

The Police had received a missing complaint of a 52-year-old woman, whereas, after investigating, the police found out that together, these 3 individuals carried out a ritual involving "human sacrifice" and slaughtered this woman. They sliced the body into pieces and buried it in the house's backyard, which is a horrible murder. However, this was not the only case, another body was found in the same backyard and was killed similarly.

"He had been using a fake Facebook account wherein he had offered to help people facing financial problems. That’s how he befriended Bhagaval Singh, and his wife Laila. It took three years for him to win their confidence and trap them after which the crime took place," the Police added.
