Justice Varma Refuses To Step Down Despite Indictment By Panel

In a significant development, Justice Yashwant Varma has refused to put in resignation after a three-member panel found event of unaccounted cash recovered from his residence, to be true.

Earlier today CJI Sanjiv Khanna forwarded the probe report to the President of India for further consideration.

According to a press release issued by the top court, "The Chief Justice of India, in terms of the In-House Procedure, has written to Hon’ble the President of India and Hon’ble the Prime Minister of India enclosing therewith copy of the 3-Member Committee report dated 03.05.2025 along with the letter/response dated 06.05.2025 received from Mr Justice Yashwant Varma".

Recently, the Supreme Court appointed in-house committee indicted the presence of unaccounted cash at the residence of the former Delhi High Court Judge.

The three-member committee, which was constituted to investigate allegations against Delhi High Court Judge, Justice Yashwant Varma, from whose residence a large amount of unaccounted cash was recovered, submitted its report to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on May 4, 2025.

On March 25, the Supreme Court appointed in-house committee began its probe into the case.

On March 24, the Supreme Court Collegium officially recommended the repatriation of Delhi High Court Judge, Justice Yashwant Varma, to the Allahabad High Court.

The official statement issued by the Collegium stated, "The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad."

The controversy around Justice Varma erupted after a fire broke out at his outhouse on March 14.

While he was not in the city at the time, firefighters responding to the blaze discovered bundles of partially burnt currency notes in a storeroom, prompting intense speculation and public outrage.
