Special NIA Court judge Anil K Bhaskar sentenced Sajil, Nasar and Najeeb to a life term, along with a fine of Rs. 50,000 each, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for the offence of being part of a terrorist organisation.

“The other three convicted, namely M. K. Nausha, P. P. Moideenkunu and P. M. Ayoob, have been sentenced to three years”, the NIA press release stated. All six accused have been convicted under IPC, UAPA, and the Explosive Substances Act.

The right hand of T J Joseph, professor of Newman College in Thodupuzha in Idukki district, was chopped off by alleged activists of the now-banned radical Islamic outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) on July 4, 2010.

The court termed it a "terror act" for which the convicts "didn't deserve any leniency". It also ordered a compensation of Rs. 4,00,000 to be given to the victim from the fine amount collected.

“The National' Investigation Agency (NIA) is still hunting for ( chargesheeted accused ) Savad, who wa spart of the barbaric attack and is currently absconding, and is also a cadre of the banned Popular Front ofIndia (PFI)”, the press release stated.

All the accused had conspired to kill Professor T.J. Joseph by chopping off his right palm over his alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammed in a question paper prepared for the Malayalam examination for B. Com students in Newman College, Thodupuzha, Idukki district.

“The accused had deemed the question as provocative and had carried out the barbaric daylight attack on the professor in the presence of his family members on 4th July 2010. The accused had attacked the professor while the family was returning from church after the Sunday morning mass. The assailants had also hurled a bomb to terrorise the public and escape from the scene”, the agency’s press release stated.

The Kerala police on January 10, 2011, had filed a chargesheet against 27 accused persons. Subsequently, the NIA took over the case. In April 2015, the NIA Special Court convicted 13 accused persons in the same case.
