Synopsis

No suitable reply has been given by the ASI for denying to proceed for whitewashing of exterior part of the alleged Masjid, court noted

The Allahabad High Court on March 12, 2025, directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to undertake the whitewashing of the exterior of Jami Masjid, Sambhal, where flaking has been observed. The court directed that the work be completed within a week, ensuring the monument is restored during the month of Ramzan.

The order was passed in the plea filed by the Committee of Management, Jami Masjid Sambhal, seeking permission for maintenance, cleaning, whitewashing, and lighting work of the structure ahead of Ramzan.

The ASI had earlier opposed the request, arguing that repeated layers of whitewash had been applied over the years, affecting the monument’s originality. However, the court noted that the ASI had not provided a clear response regarding the necessity of the restoration.

Additionally, the court prohibited the use of extra lighting fixtures on the monument’s walls, citing potential damage caused by heavy nails. Instead, it permitted the use of focus and LED lights for exterior illumination. The cost of the whitewashing is to be borne by the Masjid Committee, with reimbursement to follow upon completion of the work.

The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on April 8, with the interim order remaining in effect until the next listing.

Notably, the site is contested as both a mosque and a temple, with Hindu plaintiffs pursuing a civil suit to assert their right to access what they call the Shri Hari Har Temple, currently identified as Jami Masjid.
