Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma files defamation suit against Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia

Synopsis

Sisodia, in a press conference on June 4, 2022 had alleged malpractices by Sarma and his wife Rinki Sarma.

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has filed a suit for defamation against, Manish Sisodia, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi.

The suit has been filed in Assam’s Kamrup district.

Sisodia, in a press conference on June 4, 2022 had alleged malpractices by Sarma and his wife Rinki Sarma.

Sisodia had alleged that tenders issued for procuring Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits during the COVID-19 pandemic, were given to Rinki Sarma’s company. He had stated that Sarma, had granted the contract at an over-stated price.

It is to be noted that, Sarma was the health and family welfare minister at the relevant time.

It had been alleged that Himanta Biswa Sarma gave urgent supply orders of PPE kits to his wife’s company at the rate of ₹990 per piece while the state government bought those kits from other companies at ₹600 per piece.

Rinki Sarma has already filed a suit seeking damages from Sisodia in another court in Kamrup. According to Hindustan Times, Sisodia has been asked to appear before the court, in this case on July 25.

Sarma and his wife denied having gone on record and denied any wrong doing on their part.

The court has fixed July 22 as the next date of hearing in the chief minister’s case.

Sarma will be represented by Senior Advocate Devajit Saikia.
