The Bombay High Court on Wednesday pulled up the state government over the non-constitution of the Child Safety Committee, which the court had directed in the wake of the Badlapur sexual assault incident.
A high court division bench comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice P.K. Chavan expressed concern, stating that the committee was supposed to provide its recommendations within eight weeks of the court's order. However, the committee members had not even been communicated with yet.
“To date, the committee has not received any information. Are you serious about this? You assured us of your commitment, but no action has been taken. This reflects on your bonafide. Your actions contradict your words,” the bench said.
Chief Public Prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar informed the bench that he would take instructions from the Advocate General and report back to the court.
The high court took suo moto cognisance and registered a PIL after the cleaner of the school sexually assaulted two kindergarten-going minor girls.
The bench had directed the formation of a committee, which includes retired Justices Sadhana Jadhav and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi, retired IPS officer Meera Borwankar, education professionals Sucheta Bhawalkar and Jaywanti Baban Sawant, psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty, and Brian Seymour, President of ICSE and ISC preschools in Maharashtra and Goa.
