Anil submitted that because he raised his voice against the Government's decisions, he has been threatened, and he is deeply concerned about the safety of his life and liberty, as well as that of his family
The Bombay High Court has directed the Nagpur City Police Commissioner to decide the police protection application filed by Anil Wadapillawar, a social worker who filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the freebies provided by the State Government under the "Ladki Behna Yojana" scheme of the Shinde government.
A division bench of the High Court comprising Justice Vinay Joshi and Justice Abhay Mantri was hearing the application filed by Wadapillawar.
He contended that the PIL he filed had attracted some sections' wrath. He submitted that in political rallies and public speeches, references have been made to his act of filing the PIL against the Government's decision.
Anil submitted that because he raised his voice against the Government's decisions, he has been threatened, and he is deeply concerned about the safety of his life and liberty, as well as that of his family.
He also wrote to the Commissioner of Police, Nagpur, on 02.09.2024, bringing this issue to his attention and seeking intervention to ensure his safety. He reiterated his request to the Commissioner of Police through a subsequent application dated 30.09.2024, attaching newspaper articles that had been published. However, no action was taken.
The bench while directing the police to consider the application noted that, “There can be no dispute that it is the duty of the State to see safety and protect the life and liberty of every individual, i.e. of every citizen of the country. Article 21 of the Constitution of India has recognized the said protection as a fundamental right. The petitioner has already applied to the Commissioner of Police, ventilating expected threats and danger to his life,” the order reads.
