The bench was assured that reports sought under judicial orders would be prioritized by the department

The Bombay High Court has directed the State Government to submit data on the pending cases at the Forensic Scientific Laboratories in Mumbai and Thane.

A division bench of the high court comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Advait Sethna was hearing a petition filed by the ed-tech company Eduedge Pvt Ltd, which raised concerns about delays in pending cybercrime investigations. The petition sought the transfer of the probe from Bandra Police Station to an independent agency.

After the Additional Public Prosecutor handed over a letter of the Director of FSL explaining the upgradation in FSL labs, the bench noted that "..administrative approval has been obtained for procurement of necessary equipment and manpower for the establishment of Center of Excellence in Digital Forensic," the order reads.

The bench also observed that the hardware and software for the “Center of Excellence in Digital Forensic” project had been received and that the project would be implemented soon.

It noted that a semi-automatic project, approved by the Home Department, received a work order on October 1, 2024, and is aimed at expediting cyber forensic investigations.

The court was informed that recruitment exams for the project were conducted in September 2024 under a government resolution, and the hiring process is currently underway.

The bench was assured that reports sought under judicial orders would be prioritized by the department.
