Delhi Court directs Jail Authorities to submit CCTV footage after Sharjeel Imam alleges assault in Tihar

Synopsis

The application filed by Imam sought directions to place on record information about the alleged assault and harassment that happened on June 30, 2022, when 8-9 convicts along with some others entered his cell.

Delhi Court has asked for CCTV footage to be made available from inside Tihar Prison in an application filed by UAPA accused Sharjeel Imam in which he alleged that fellow inmates were not only harassing him with names like “Terrorist” & “Anti-national” but also assaulting him.

Additional Session Judge of the Karkardooma District Court has directed the Jail Superintendent to be present before the Court on the next date of hearing for assisting the court in disposal of the matter.

The application filed by Imam had sought directions to place on record information about the alleged assault and harassment done on him on June 30, 2022, when 8-9 convicts along with some others had entered in his cell.

Imam had submitted that there are two CCTV cameras installed in his cell while the third one is just outside. Furthermore,  Imam had submitted that otherwise he feels safe in the present ward of the jail with all other inmates but does not know why the said incident occurred.

The Court after hearing the arguments directed that the register of the inmates/ sewadars, who participated in the said surprise search, may also be produced in the court on the next date.

Additionally, the Court has asked the CCTV footage of all the said three cameras for June 30, 2022, for the period 6.00 PM to 8.00 PM be also produced on the next date.

Imam is facing charges under Sections 124A, 153A, 153B, 505 of IPC, and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

The case arose out of FIR No. 22/2020 which was registered at PS Crime Branch, New Delhi, simultaneously with 4 other FIRs registered across multiple states for the same speeches attributed to Imam.

Imam was arrested on January 28 from his hometown Jehanabad, Bihar in this case, and produced before a Delhi Court.
