Per the ED, Tanwar was a key managerial figure responsible for illegally acquiring mining rights and for conducting illegal and unscientific mining beyond permissible limits.
The Delhi High Court, on Monday, disposed of the petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) challenging the interim bail granted to Ved Pal Tanwar, who was arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in the Dadam area of Haryana. The matter was presided over by Justice Ravinder Dudeja.
During the hearing, Special Counsel Zoheb Hussain informed the court that this petition had become infructuous as Ved Pal Tanwar's interim bail had expired and he had subsequently surrendered. In view of these developments, the court disposed of the petition.
The Delhi High Court, in January 2025, granted interim bail to Ved Pal Tanwar for six weeks as he underwent gall bladder surgery. The bench of Justice Vikas Mahajan, noting the objections of ED, observed that “he (Tanwar) has undergone surgery- that is enough. Let him be with his family for a while”.
However, in February 2025, the court heard another bail application of Ved Pal Tanwar, on the ground that the case was primarily based on Section 7 of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA), which was not a scheduled offence anymore. Tanwar also approached the Court in September 23, 2024, challenging his arrest by the ED.
Background:
According to the ED, a search and seizure operation was conducted on August 3, resulting in the confiscation of large amounts of unaccounted cash, documents, and jewelry worth Rs. 3.7 crore, cash amounting to Rs. 26.45 lakh, and a Mercedes car valued at Rs. 1 crore.
The present case stemmed from a complaint filed by the Regional Officer of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Bhiwani, against the firm M/s. Govardhan Mines and Minerals. As a result, an FIR was registered by the Haryana Police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The investigation revealed that the said firm was involved in large-scale illegal and unscientific mining in the Dadam area of Haryana, which caused alarming environmental damage and losses to the exchequer.
Moreover, around five individuals succumbed to the rampant illegal mining in the area due to landslides.
