[Kanjhawala Hit & Drag Case] Delhi Court orders framing of charges against 7 accused persons

The case pertains to the death of a 20-year-old girl, Anjali Singh, who was riding a scooter when she was hit by a car and dragged under it for nearly 12 kilometers in Kanjhawala, Delhi

A Delhi Court on Thursday, last week ordered the framing of charges against seven accused persons in the Kanjhawala hit and drag case.

On January 1st, a 20-year-old girl, Anjali Singh on a scooter was hit by a car and her body was dragged under the car for nearly 12 kilometers in Kanjhawala, Delhi.

Additional Sessions Juge (ASJ) Neeraj Gaur of Rohini Court, Delhi, ordered the framing of charges against Amit Khanna, Krishan, Manoj Mittal, Mithun, Deepak Khanna, Ankush and Ashutosh under Sections 302 (murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) and 212 (harbouring offender) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The court also said charges were liable to be framed against the seven accused under Sections 182 (false information with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.

Amit Khanna, the alleged driver of the car, has also been charged under sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC along with provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Delhi Police had arrested Deepak Khanna, Amit Khanna, Krishna, Mithun and Manoj Mittal in the case on January 2.

In January, co-accused Ashutosh Bhardwaj was granted bail in the case by ASJ Susheel Bala Dagar who had said that he was “no more required for custodial interrogation”. The judge had observed, “At this stage, there seems to be no document in the form of CDR / CCTV footage, etc. produced by the investigating agency to show any prior meeting of minds of accused/ applicant Ashutosh with the other co-accused persons to commit the act before he received the alleged call from co-accused Ankush at 4.56 am. The accused/ applicant is in JC since 05.01.2023 and is no more required for custodial interrogation.”

Court had allowed bail to Bhardwaj on executing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with one surety in the like amount to the satisfaction of the Trial Court/ Duty MM.
