The dispute became public ahead of the docu-drama's November 18 release
In a legal confrontation involving Tamil cinema stalwarts, actor Dhanush K. Raja’s Wunderbar Films Private Limited has filed a civil suit in the Madras High Court against actor Nayanthara Kurian, her husband and director Vignesh Sivan, Rowdy Pictures Private Limited, and others. The dispute stems from the alleged use of visuals related to the Tamil movie Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the Netflix docu-drama Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.
Wunderbar Films sought the court's permission to include Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, a Mumbai-based entity responsible for Netflix's content investments in India, in the case. The company filed an application under Clause 12 of the Letters Patent, seeking to extend the court’s jurisdiction to include the entity.
The matter was heard on Wednesday before Justice Abdul Quddhose. Advocates Gautam S. Raman and Maithreyi Canthaswamy Sharma represented Wunderbar Films, with senior counsel P.S. Raman urging the court to grant leave. However, the respondents, represented by senior counsel Sathish Parasaran and R. Parthasarathy, opposed the request.
After hearing preliminary arguments, Justice Quddhose granted the application to extend jurisdiction, noting that the primary cause of action arose within the Madras High Court's territory. The court refrained from commenting on the merits of the main case.
The dispute became public ahead of the docu-drama's November 18 release. On November 16, Nayanthara addressed an open letter to Dhanush via social media, accusing him of withholding a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for over two years. She alleged personal animosity, citing legal action from Dhanush demanding Rs 10 crore in damages for using behind-the-scenes visuals of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.
