Synopsis

On June 12, Public Prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar informed the bench that there was inadvertence on his part in informing the police about the protection to be granted to Asif as per the May 6 order

Asif Ahmad Shaikh, who was forced to chant "Jai Shree Ram" and subsequently given police protection, informed the Bombay High Court on June 12 that he was attacked again and his car was vandalized.

The division bench of the high court comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Shyam Chandak heard this matter on June 12 and posted it for further hearing on June 26.

The court allowed time for Public Prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar to gather instructions regarding the incident.

On January 19, Asif was traveling with his wife and child in train when 30-40 students approached him and forced him to chant 'Jai Shree Ram.'

He filed a police complaint regarding the incident. Then, on January 25, Asif was allegedly beaten up by a group reportedly at the behest of a local politician, and his wife was detained for hours at a police station.

Asif and his wife then approached the high court regarding the two incidents. The high court directed the preservation of CCTV footage from the police station and instructed the superintendent of police to oversee the investigation.

Later, when an FIR was filed against Asif and his family at the behest of a local politician on May 6, the court deemed it appropriate to grant police protection to Asif and his family.

On June 12, Public Prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar informed the bench that there was inadvertence on his part in informing the police about the protection to be granted to Asif as per the May 6 order.

He assured the court that protection would be provided starting from June 13.

He also requested time from the court to gather instructions regarding the vandalism of Asif's car.
