A sessions court in Mumbai on Friday granted bail to Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in a defamation case filed by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya and his wife, Medha Somaiya.

Raut had appealed the magistrate court's order, which sentenced him to 15 days of imprisonment for defaming the Somaiyas. The sessions court granted bail to Raut on a bond of Rs. 50,000 in the revision application he filed.

Judicial Magistrate Aarti Kulkarni sentenced Raut to 15 days of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹25,000. Soon after the pronouncement, Raut’s lawyer moved an application seeking suspension of the sentence to file an appeal.

The magistrate allowed the application and suspended the sentence for 30 days.

Medha Somaiya had filed a defamation case under Sections 499 and 500 of the IPC against Sanjay Raut for making defamatory remarks about her family.

In her complaint, she alleged that Raut made baseless and false accusations against both her and her husband, claiming they were involved in a ₹100 crore scam related to the construction of public toilets at the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.

Medha Somaiya claimed that Sanjay Raut published defamatory remarks in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamna' without verifying the statements.

In her complaint, she sought an unconditional apology from Raut and requested a restraining order to prevent him from publishing, printing, or circulating any further defamatory remarks against her.
