The Central and Western Railways have informed the Bombay High Court that over 45000 people have lost their lives in the Mumbai Suburban Railway System in the last 15 years.
The affidavit was filed by the Railways Department in a Public Interest Litigation concerning the deaths of commuters on the Western Suburban trains.
The PIL filed through Advocate Rohan Shah states that 2,590 Western Railway suburban commuters lose their lives each year.
The plea further states that the Mumbai Local is the second busiest railway system after Tokyo. He pointed out that the death ratio per thousand commuters is 33.8, while in New York it is 2.66, and in London, it is 1.43.
The affidavit filed by the Central Railways stated that a total of 29321 people lost their lives from 2009 to 2024.
The Western Railways submitted that 16475 people lost their lives between 2009 and 2024. Furthermore, 6552 people lost their lives between 2005 to 2008.

The affidavit states that a Divisional Level Committee has been in place since 2017 constituted by the General Manager to closely monitor the incidents of injury and deaths. Since then the Committee has conducted quarterly meetings to review the progress.
