Tamankar alleged that companies under regulatory scrutiny by agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department had made large contributions to ruling parties via electoral bonds. Additionally, firms awarded government contracts had also made substantial investments through these bonds.
The Delhi High Court heard a petition filed by one Sudip Narayan Tamankar seeking directions against CBI to investigate the alleged corruption in the electoral bond data. Tamankar claimed that he complained to the CBI on April 18, requesting an investigation into these allegations, but no action was taken.
Advocate Pranav Sachdeva, representing Tamankar, further alleged that the corruption and lack of accountability seriously undermined citizens' right to life and the rule of law.
The bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela raised concerns regarding the maintainability of a petition. The court questioned the admissibility of the petition, noting that Tamankar had previously approached the Supreme Court, where his plea was dismissed in August. The Supreme Court had observed that individual grievances of this nature should be addressed through the legal remedies available.
The high court, however, instructed Advocate Pranav Sachdeva to submit a written note addressing the legal aspects and maintainability of the petition. The court scheduled the next hearing for October 29, 2024.
