Punjab and Haryana High Court grants bail to former Health Minister Vijay Singla in corruption case

Synopsis

Singla was arrested on May 24, for allegedly committing offences under sections 7 and 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act at Phase VIII police station in Mohali. He has been accused of demanding “one per cent commission” in tenders and purchases by his department.

Justice Lisa Gill of Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted bail to former Punjab health minister and AAP MLA, Dr. Vijay Singla.

According to Indian Express, Singla, was arrested on May 24, for allegedly committing offences under sections 7 and 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act at Phase VIII police station in Mohali. He has been accused of demanding “one per cent commission” in tenders and purchases by his department.

On the last date of hearing, the bench asked the state to take a stand on, whether it was opposing the bail plea of Singla. The matter was adjourned after the counsel took time to seek instructions.

Today,  Punjab Advocate General Anmol Rattan Sidhu submitted that the investigation in the matter was complete. He submitted that Singla, has expressed that he has no objection to the prosecution’s request to take his voice samples. He informed the court that, Singla, has cooperated in the investigation. The court, thus granted him bail.

Singla’s bail plea was earlier dismissed by a special court in Mohali. Upon the dismissal, he filed petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking regular bail.

Senior Advocate Vinod Ghai, appearing for Singla, had contended that  the FIR was the outcome of political rivalry and wreaking vengeance had gathered unprecedented popularity among the masses.
