Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani nominated to Rajya Sabha

Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani has been recently nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Ram Nath Kovind.

The tenure of Mahesh Jethmalani, one of the leading lawyers of the country, as Rajya Sabha MP would be till May 2024.

He has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the past. He has also been a member of the National Executive of the BJP. He completed his Bachelor of Arts from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and his Master of Arts from Oxford University.

Mahesh Jethmalani's nomination came days after a seat in the nominated category became vacant as Raghunath Mohapatra succumbed to COVID-19 earlier this month.

The President of India under Article 80 of the Indian constitution can nominate 12 members to Rajya Sabha on the advice of Union Government. The nominated members are drawn from fields such as literature, science, sports, art, and social service.

It must be noted that, Mr. Jhetmalani has appeared in several important cases during his tenure as an advocate.

 He has represented and been a part of influential cases such as -

  1. Birla family in the Priyamvada Birla case
  2. Anil Ambani in the Reliance Case
  3. Harshad Mehta in the Maruti Udyog Case
  4. Rajni Patil in the Prof. Vishram Patil murder case in which the brother of ex-President of India, Pratibha Patil was a suspect.
  5. Trial of former Chief Minister of Maharashtra AR Antulay

Recently, he has been representing former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and former State Intelligence Department (SID) chief Rashmi Shukla in their ongoing court battles against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. He is also representing petitioners in a writ petition filed by Biswajit Sarkar, brother of deceased BJP member Avijit Sarkar who was allegedly killed by TMC members during the post-poll violence in West Bengal.
