The Union Minister clarified that the comment made by her about the people of Tamil Nadu in relation to the Rameshwaram café bomb blast was not intended to offend their sentiments

Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje has submitted an apology affidavit in the Madras High Court, seeking to quash the criminal proceedings initiated against her following her controversial remarks about the Rameswaram Café bombers. The case, now adjourned to September 5th, revolves around comments Karandlaje allegedly made in March 2024, shortly after the café blasts at Bengaluru.

The affidavit filed by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment stresses that her comments were not intended to offend Tamil Nadu's people. She expressed regret for any hurt caused and retracted her statement after realizing its impact. In her apology, Karandlaje underscored her deep respect for the state's culture, history, and traditions, requesting that her apology be formally recorded in the interest of justice.

The case was heard on Tuesday by Justice G Jayachandran, where Advocate General PS Raman sought time to review the affidavit. The court agreed to the adjournment request.

The controversy began when Karandlaje reportedly stated, "People trained in Tamil Nadu plant bombs here. Bomb was planted at the hotel," in March 2024. This led to a complaint from C. Thiagarajan, a Madurai resident, who accused her of attempting to incite animosity between Tamils and Kannadigas.

The FIR was registered under Sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause a riot), 153(A) (promoting enmity between groups), 505(1)(b) (statements likely to cause public alarm), and 505(2) (statements fostering hatred or ill will) of the Indian Penal Code.
