Highlighting a decade of efforts to facilitate justice, the Prime Minister noted the mission-level modernization of courts and praised the contributions of the Supreme Court and judiciary
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasized that a significant portion of the advancements in India’s judicial infrastructure has been achieved in the past decade.
Speaking at the inauguration function of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary organized by the Supreme Court of India, PM Modi highlighted the country’s ongoing legal reforms.
Addressing recent developments, PM Modi revealed that approximately Rs 8,000 crore has been invested in developing judicial infrastructure.
Remarkably, 75 percent of the total amount spent on judicial infrastructure in the last 25 years was utilized during these last 10 years alone, he emphasised.
He further pointed out that this period has seen the creation of more than 7,500 court halls and 11,000 residential units for district judiciary personnel, marking a substantial upgrade in the country’s judicial infrastructure.
PM Modi highlighted that improving the ease of living for citizens hinges on the accessibility and efficiency of justice. He pointed out that modernizing district courts with advanced infrastructure and technology is crucial to achieving this goal. The Prime Minister noted that the current backlog of around 4.5 crore cases in district courts underscores the need for such upgrades.
In addition to physical infrastructure, PM Modi stressed the importance of integrating technology into the judicial system. He praised the role of e-Courts in accelerating judicial processes and addressing challenges faced by lawyers and complainants.
The third phase of the e-Courts project, approved in 2023, aims to develop a unified technology platform that incorporates emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Optical Character Recognition, he told. He informed that this platform is designed to analyze pending cases, predict future case trends, and enhance coordination among various departments, including police, forensics, jails, and courts.
PM Modi also highlighted the role of the e-Committee of the Supreme Court in driving these technological advancements. He noted that technology not only speeds up judicial processes but also helps in integrating and streamlining the work of different sectors involved in the justice system.
The Prime Minister concluded by affirming that these efforts are moving India towards a justice system that is prepared for future challenges. “We are moving towards a justice system which will be completely future-ready,” he remarked, underscoring the commitment to continuous improvement and modernization in the judicial sector.
