PM Modi called for swift investigations and severe punishment for those involved in heinous crimes like rape, insisting that the criminal justice system must instill fear in perpetrators

In his Independence Day address from the historic Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2024, spotlighted the evolving role of women in India, while also addressing the dark shadow of crimes against women that continues to plague the nation.

PM Modi's speech underscored the government’s commitment to a women-led development model, highlighting their increasing presence and leadership across various sectors—be it innovation, employment, or defense. He lauded the achievements of women in the Air Force, Army, Navy, and space sectors, showcasing their remarkable contributions and strength.

However, the Prime Minister did not shy away from addressing a grim reality. He expressed deep concern over the ongoing atrocities against women, emphasizing the urgent need for societal introspection.

PM Modi spoke with palpable emotion about the visible outrage among citizens and stressed the necessity for immediate action.

"As a society we should seriously dwell upon the atrocities being meted out to our mother, sisters and daughters. The outrage is visible in the nation and among the citizens. I can feel this outrage. The states, society and the nation have to take serious cognizance of this malefaction. Crimes against women should be investigated without any delay," he said.

He stressed that "those committing such demonic acts must be booked prima facie to reinstate the trust on the government, judiciary and civil society".

Moreover, he highlighted that often the rape victims are highlighted all over the media and discussed in society, however the rapist does not make the new.

"Now the need of the hour is that there should be a wide discussion about the criminals who get punished so that even those who commit such sins fear the consequences including hanging to death. I feel that it is very important to create this fear," PM Modi asserted.
