Synopsis

Special CBI court also remanded Dr. Ghosh's security officer, Afsar Ali, along with two alleged accomplices—contractors Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra—to judicial custody until September 23

In a significant development, a CBI special court in West Bengal has sent Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, to judicial custody until September 23. His remand is in connection with a case involving alleged financial irregularities at the medical institution.

Dr. Ghosh was taken into custody by the CBI on September 2, following a Calcutta High Court direction issued on August 23 that ordered a CBI investigation into the financial misconduct at the college. This probe was initiated shortly after a resident doctor was found dead at the hospital, with the case taking a darker turn when allegations of rape and murder emerged.

The investigation was prompted by a petition filed by Akhtar Ali, a former Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, who accused Dr. Ghosh of severe financial irregularities during his tenure as principal. Ghosh's attempt to challenge the high court's decision in the Supreme Court was rejected on September 6.

Dr. Ghosh has faced widespread criticism in the aftermath of the tragic incident, which ignited protests across the country. Amid these allegations, he resigned from his position, but was controversially appointed as principal of another college soon after. This move provoked a strong response, with the Calcutta High Court condemning the state for what it described as a "reward" for Ghosh despite the ongoing investigation and accusations.

The case continues to draw national attention as Ghosh's remand marks another step in the ongoing investigation.
