A special court in Kolkata on Friday granted permission to CBI for a polygraph test to be administered on Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.  Roy, who was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10, following the discovery of the victim's body, has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

During initial investigations, police noted several injuries on Roy, including on his left cheek, left hand between the index and ring fingers, and the back of his left thigh. Subsequently, the CBI took custody of Roy under court orders and subjected him to prolonged questioning, along with a psychological assessment.

The court has also approved a polygraph test for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and four other doctors on duty the night of August 8-9. Ghosh has already undergone over 88 hours of questioning as part of the investigation into the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.

The case has drawn significant attention and concern. During a nationwide protest by doctors against the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, a mob of 7,000 people armed with lathis and hockey sticks gathered at RG Kar Hospital in the middle of the night on August 14. They vandalized the emergency ward and other areas, raising serious concerns about the safety of the medical staff.

The Supreme Court took suo moto cognizance of the incident of August 9. When Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud led bench heard the matter on August 20, it pulled up the Kolkata state machinery for the manner in which the brutal rape and murder of the woman at the medical college was handled.

It is noteworthy that former principal Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, who resigned from his post as principal on August 12 citing "moral responsibility" following the August 9 incident, was promptly appointed as the principal of another medical college in Kolkata.

On August 23, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Kolkata Police to transfer its case involving financial irregularities against Dr. Ghosh to the CBI. Ghosh and his wife had also filed a case before the hgih corut to restrain media outlets from conducting a "media trial" against them, however, the plea was rejected by the court.
