Attorney General mentions raising retirement age of women judges as Justice Hima Kohli retires

Synopsis

Justice Kohli who was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 31st August 2021 is to retire after two days on September 1st

Attorney General for India, R Venkataramani today mentioned that the retirement age for women judges should be raised, during his address at the ceremonial bench of the Supreme Court held for Justice Hima Kohli.

"I should have filed a writ petition to enhance the age of retirement for at least women judges. I am sure your lordship would have granted it in my favour.. You have dedicated your entire life to the courts..", the AG said. 

Senior Advocate and President of Supreme Court Bar Association, Kapil Sibal also resonated the AG's statement. "This has been a very short stint", he said.

Referring to his advice to juniors of studying a judge, Sibal added, "When we came to your court and your glasses are down on your nose and you are looking up, we know we are in trouble..nobody can finesse you..nobody can throw a googly at you...you were destined to be a judge..", he added.

Sibal further told the Supreme Court judge that she created history at the court. He also urged her not to think of her retirement as a step down, but a step up as she would now be free to speak her mind.

Chief Justice of India thanked Justice Kohli for supporting him when the going was tough. We have been friends and allies, you are not only a woman judge but a fierce protector of the right of women, he said.
