The plea sought direction to address the issue of the spread of Lumpy disease in Delhi and its danger to cows living on the streets.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Central Government, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Commissioner of police in an application seeking direction that the organs of the dead cow are not dismembered in the name of scientific disposal.
A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad has listed the matter for further hearing on March 2, 2023.
The application has been moved by the petitioner appearing in person, Ajay Gautam seeking direction that both the State government and the Central government make a scheme together for the welfare of the cow living on the roads and also ensure that after the death, the organs of the dead cow is not dismembered in the name of scientific disposal.
It also sought direction for the Delhi Police that if they receive any call related to cow distress, then in such a situation they should directly transfer that call to the concerned departments.
The application has been moved in a plea filed by Ajay Gautam stating that the cows infected with the Lumpy disease strictly need medical treatments at the earliest.
"This disease can turn into an epidemic. Therefore, immediate action is needed to stop the spread of this disease among our Holy cows", the plea by Ajay Gautam added.
The plea submitted that "Lumpy Skin Disease is a contagious viral disease that spreads among cattle, Bovine (Cow family) through mosquitoes, flies, lice, and wasps by direct contact, and also through contaminated food and water. The disease causes fever and nodules on the skin, and it can be fatal."
It further stated that everyday cows are dying on roads due to the above reasons and the helpline number issued by the Delhi Government is not responding and answering calls/queries related to the Lumpy Skin Virus properly.
Additionally, it was submitted that only one Isolation Shelter for cows has been set up by the Delhi Government in Rewala, Khanpur South-West District for 4500 Cattle, although there are more than 20,000 to 25,000 stray cows in the National Capital.
