Speaking at the All India District Legal Services Authorities Meet organised at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today remarked that ease of justice is as important as ease of doing business and ease of living.
Highlighting Article 39A of the Constitution of India which provided for the government’s duty to establish legal aid, PM said that it shows the importance of access to justice and ensures that even laypersons can believe that when there is no one to listen to their grievances, the doors of the courts are open.
Highlighting the initiatives taken by the government in improving judicial infrastructure, PM Modi remarked that the government has worked hard to improve the judicial infrastructure. He said that in the last 8 years, nearly 9,000 crores have been spent to improve judicial infrastructure in the country.
Speaking of the E-courts and the video conference hearings during the pandemic, PM said that the E-court project has made way for virtual courts in the country. PM highlighted that over 1 crore cases were heard by the district courts virtually and over 60 lakh cases were heard virtually in High Courts and Supreme Court.
The Prime Minister further spoke of the state of undertrial prisoners who have been in prisons and urged that legal aid should be provided to ensure that they are released.
Addressing the District Judges present at the event, he asked them to use their position in the District Level Undertrial Review Committees to expedite the release of undertrial prisoners.
