Former Supreme Court judge AM Khanwilkar appointed as Lokpal Chairman

Synopsis

Justice Khanwilkar has been part of several important verdicts including decriminalisation of homosexuality, women’s entry into the Sabarimala temple, validity of Aadhaar etc.

Former Supreme Court judge, Justice AM Khanwilkar has been appointed as the as chairman of Lokpal.

Justice Khanwilkar retired from apex court in July 2022, and was elevated as Judge of Supreme Court of India and assumed charge on May 13, 2016.

Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose was the previous Lokpal chief who retired two years ago.

After Justice Ghose retired in May 2022, judicial member Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty was functioning as the acting chairman of the anti-corruption ombudsman.

Centre has also notified the appointment of three judicial members and three non-judicial members of Lokpal. The judicial members include former Himachal Pradesh HC Chief Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, former Allahabad HC CJ Sanjay Yadav and Law Commission chairman Ritu Raj Awasthi.
