Synopsis

In its resolution proposing the names of these three judges for elevation to the Supreme Court, the collegium has said that in view of the ever-mounting pendency of cases, it had become necessary to ensure that the Court has full working judge-strength leaving no vacancy at any point of time

The Supreme Court will now be functioning at its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges as three new judges took oath today.

These judges are Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court; Justice Augustine George Masih, former Chief Justice Rajasthan High Court and Justice Sandeep Mehta, former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

A few days back, the Supreme Court had issued a notification recommending these three names for elevation to the Supreme Court while noting that the workload of judges has increased considerably.

Yesterday, the Centre cleared the resolutions sent by the Supreme Court Collegium.
