Synopsis

"We are not the American Supreme Court. How many cases does the American Supreme Court deal within a year? Do you know that? All 17 Benches of the Supreme Court probably deal with more cases in one day than the American Supreme Court deals with in an entire year...", the CJI said

The Chief Justice of India yesterday remarked that the Indian Supreme Court disposes of more cases in a day than the United States Supreme Court does in a year.

This remark was made by the CJI when a petition was brought before his bench seeking disposal of pending cases before different courts in specific time frames.

"VERY DESIRABLE", CJI Chandrachud responded to the petitioner in person before him, one Madan Gopal Agarwal.

Agarwal sought disposal of pending cases before the Supreme Court within 12 months, the High Courts within 18 months and District Courts within 30 months.

On Agarwal's submission that there were similar rules on disposal in western countries, the CJI said, "The number of cases the 17 benches of Supreme Court disposes of in a day is probably more than what the US Supreme Court deals with in over a year".

The bench also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra opined that as the Supreme Court implemented access to justice, it could not restrict the number of people approaching the courts for justice.

Top Court accordingly observed that it was not inclined to entertain the Writ Petition instituted under Article 32 of the Constitution of India.
