A Delhi court on Friday granted 10 days to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, an accused in the Pul Bangash killings during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, to examine the documents handed over to him by the CBI, including the charge sheet, in the case.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vidhi Gupta Anand of the Rouse Avenue Court passed the directions on an application moved by the counsel for Tytler, who sought two weeks to complete the scrutiny of the documents.
During the proceedings on August 11, Tytler appeared through video conferencing.
"Matter be now put up for scrutiny of documents/ further proceedings on 21.08.2023 at 02:00 P.M", the ACMM said.
Recently, on August 4, Special Judge Vikas Dhull of Rouse Avenue Court granted the Congress leader pre-arrest bail on furnishing a bail bond of Rs. 1 lakh and a surety of like amount in a case related to the Pul Bangash killings during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
While granting anticipatory bail, the court also imposed certain conditions on Tytler, including that he will not tamper with the evidence in the case or leave the country without its permission.
The case pertains to the incident of killing of three people and a gurdwara was set ablaze in the Pul Bangash area on November 1, 1984, a day after the then prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards.
On July 26, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Vidhi Gupta Anand had issued summons to Jagdish Tytler and directed him to appear before the court on August 5.
“I have gone through the supplementary chargesheet, case record, statement of eyewitnesses and other witnesses. There is sufficient material to proceed further”, the ACMM had said. She had further said, “I take cognizance of Section 148 , 153A and 188 of IPC”.
In May, the CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet against Tytler based on statements of new witnesses who claimed that they saw him allegedly instigating the mob which had assembled at Azad Market’s Pul Bangash Gurdwara on November 1, 1984, following which it was burnt down and three persons were killed. The chargesheet alleged that Tytler “incited, instigated and provoked” the mob, after which he had moved an anticipatory bail plea at Rouse Avenue Court on August 1.
